Welcome to UI Design

This is the home page for David Anderson's website on User Interface Design.

For some months now, a few people with whom I work, have been encouraging me to write up and publish some of the creative work I've been doing in User Interface Design. I finally relented and uidesign.net is the result. Over the coming months, I will be publishing a paper each month on some aspect of my recent work.

I have been designing a very large banking application at a bank in Singapore. There was almost 2 man years of Analysis and Design for the User Interface and perhaps 9 man years in development of UI Views. All the UI Development has been done using the Java JFC (Swing) API, so its been a very interesting time for everyone involved.

I hope that you will take the time to read about my work and get involved in the development of the uidesign.net site by providing feedback and ideas.

Content of uidesign.net

  • AWhite Paper every month
  • Guest White Papers, periodically
  • Links to other UI Design sites and related topics
  • Book Reviews - UI Design texts, OO Design texts, and anything else that I like
  • Humour spot
  • Feedback - letters to the editor
  • Parts Bin Section with
  • "Widget Spotlight" - an occasional series on good new widgets
  • "Graphic Visualisation Spotlight" - an occasional series on how to make better use of visual communication
UI Patterns

This month's White Paper introduces the first of my Patterns for UI Design - a pattern for descriptive labels, first used for Address information. During the coming months I will be developing this work and presenting more patterns for design.

On the Links page you will find references to other work in the field of patterns for UI. I hope that my new work is complementary to what has gone before and helps to raise the level of absraction away from simple User Interaction and into the field of design layout and component behaviour.

Book Reviews

The first full book reviews are now available. I am reviewing, Designing Visual Interfaces by Mullet and Sano, Sunsoft Press / Prentice Hall, and Developing User Interfaces by Olsen, Morgan Kaufmann. I hope to review 2 books each month. The books reviewed will discuss UI Design or related topics for practical UI Design and Development.

Next Edition

The 2nd edition of uidesign.net will be posted to the website around February 14th. The 2nd edition will feature a White Paper on User Interface Analysis and 2 full book reviews which look at UI Design on big projects, along with your feedback on the first month of the site. If you wish to be kept informed of updates to the site then please join our discussion list, discussion@uidesign.net
