Year of the Rabbit

Welcome to UI Design

An Easter Egg from Scotland

Happy Easter from Scotland!

Another month, another country, another religious festival. I've been relocating back to my home in Scotland and as such this March edition of UI Design is late. It's also not as advertised. The white paper is one I had planned for April entitled "User Interface Modeling". It details how I go about developing a paper prototype with a group of users.

The paper for this month has been postponed until I find time to do it justice. I had planned to introduce a series of Interaction Patterns, none of them new but ones that I use often and I feel justifably need to be documented in a fashion which gives us a language to describe and re-use them. They will be coming up in a future edition. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the material on paper prototyping and the process for doing so.

Google

Jakob Nielsen is right! Google is the best search engine for the web at the moment. It has successfully indexed UIDesign.net. Check it out at http://www.google.com and search for "User Interface Analysis".

Swing

I've also been busy writing contributions to a forthcoming book about the Java JFC Swing API, entitled "Swing" by Matt Robinson and Pavel Vorobiev. My contribution is a series of guidelines on how to use UI code to produce better designed User Interfaces leading to better usability and better visual communication.

The book will be out in early summer. More news later.

Book Reviews

This month we feature feedback from David Ruble on the review of his book from last month. It would appear that the UIDesign.net reviews are being well received and well respected.

This month, we review "GUI Design for Dummies" by Laura Arlov and "Constructing the User Interface with Statecharts" by Ian Horrocks.

Next Edition

The fourth edition is slated for sometime in late April but the best way to stay in touch is to join the discussion list. I will be including a review of my first few days with an iMac!
