It
is interesting to consider the UI aspects of the new uidesign list
Subscription Form on the left hand Sidebar.
Most people would probably believe that a web based form submission
is more 'friendly' than the interface to the mailing list used on
the "Update Notification" page. Indeed we know that subscriptions
to the list have increased dramatically since the introduce of the
Web Form.
However,
consider that in the case of the Form you have to accurately type
your own email address whereas the boring old email interface only
requires you to type the word subscribe and if you get it wrong
majordomo will complain. With the Form if you get the email address
wrong there is no way to easily return any kind of message or status
to you. A site which I support which collects addresses for a client
contact list generates up to 10 bounces per day due to people putting
in the most idiotic mail addresses. Problems such as missing ".com"s,
spaces around the "@" symbol etc.. This particular company
is missing around 25% of its contacts by not providing a better
address verification right on the web form.
Sometimes
it is hard to improve on a command line interface.
