The
cover tells us that "The creator of the Macintosh
project goes beyond user interfaces to show how the web,
computers and information appliances can be made easier
to learn and use." The back cover tells us that Jef
Raskin has not only worked for Apple on the Macintosh
but has more recently consulted to HP, IBM, Motorola,
NCR, Xerox, Ricoh, Canon and AT&T. The question to
be answered though was, "Is the book any good?"
Well, Yes it is! Indeed one of the more important books
on Interaction Design yet published. Here is why!

In
the recent tradition at uidesign.net of flying in the
face of the popular wisdom, we would like to suggest that making
screens bigger just isn't the answer for the problems of interacting
with smaller, wireless devices, or even big wired devices for
that matter. Making the screen bigger is just the current fashionable
red herring to distract you from the plain and simple fact that
the vendors can't get the design right. Let's talk about screen
real estate!

Joel
Spolsky is publishing his own book on UI Design at his Manila
site. The Chapters are appearing each week or so. We haven't
been following closely but what we have seen looks pretty good.
The
site is updated regularly with Joel's weblog. Is this the first
UI Design weblog on the net? There have been many web design,
web development and usability logs but perhaps, just maybe,
this is the first truly UI related weblog.

"I
like your `Differentiate by Usability’ article a lot. I think
you point out differences that also have implications for research
- market as well as product development research."
"I
have to say that your piece makes a whopping assumption that
you oddly leave unaddressed: that issues of usability somehow
sprang to life with web/WAP browsing."
"And
you are right that usability is the acid test. But is it much
deeper and more pervasive than that? Feature bloat reaches back
throughout the software achitecture" read
